Maren Morris Makes Announcement After Divorce
Country singer Maren Morris made a significant announcement on social media, revealing her bisexuality to her 1.5 million Instagram followers.
The 34-year-old star shared the news on Sunday with several photos from her RSVP Redux tour stop in Phoenix, Arizona. In the caption, Morris wrote, “Happy to be the B in LGBTQ+, happy pride!” Some of the pictures featured the singer waving a Pride flag, marking the public celebration of her identity.
This announcement comes less than a year after Morris filed for divorce from her husband, singer-songwriter Ryan Hurd, with whom she shares a 3-year-old son, Hayes Andrew. Fans had speculated about Morris's sexuality for some time, particularly after she was seen being affectionate with female friends in photos. A notable image from April 23 showed her kissing and embracing photographer Sonya Jasinski.
Morris has long been an advocate for LGBT issues. In a highly publicized appearance in April, she defended taking her young son to a drag show, a move that sparked controversy amidst Tennessee's drag ban legislation.
During an interview on Kelly Clarkson’s podcast, Morris recounted her experience at the benefit show at Bridgestone Arena. “There were drag queens like throughout, entertaining as well, and one actually danced with me when I was singing my song, ‘The Middle.’ And it was just amazing and fun,” she said.
Morris shared her perspective on drag culture, highlighting its artistic value.
“My son loves watching me, like sit in the makeup chair and just is like fascinated with the colors … it was just like completely harmless,” she explained. “But I think it’s just such an amazing expression of artistry, and so I just think like normalizing it and making it seem like these are just people that love dressing up too, is an amazing thing.” She emphasized that the event was family-friendly and all-ages.
Previously, during the Love Rising concert in Nashville in 2023, Morris made a bold statement about introducing her son to drag queens, challenging Tennessee's proposed legislation that would prohibit minors from attending drag shows. “Yes, I introduced my son to some drag queens today, so Tennessee, f***ing arrest me,” she declared.
Morris has also been vocal about her views on the country music scene, criticizing certain aspects as misogynistic, racist, homophobic, and transphobic. Last fall, she expressed her disillusionment with the genre, saying, “I don’t want to say goodbye, but I really cannot participate in the really toxic arms of this institution anymore.” She described some segments of country music as "hyper-masculine" and referred to it as “butt rock.”
