Dolphins Issue Statement After Body Camera Footage Released
The Miami Dolphins have finally spoken out regarding the release of bodycam footage showing NFL star Tyreek Hill’s tense detention by Miami-Dade Police officers. The video, which captured the moments leading up to Hill’s arrest, showed him being handcuffed and made to sit on the curb near his vehicle, sparking intense reactions from both the public and the team.
In a statement, the Dolphins expressed their disappointment and anger over the conduct of the officers, calling for consequences. "We are saddened by the overly aggressive and violent conduct directed towards Tyreek Hill, Calais Campbell, and Jonnu Smith by police officers before yesterday’s game," the team said. They emphasized the unnecessary use of force, highlighting how fortunate the situation didn’t escalate further. The team added that Hill’s status as an NFL player raises the question, "What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?"

The Dolphins also acknowledged their longstanding positive relationship with the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), stating that most officers serve the community honorably. However, they were quick to condemn the actions of the officers involved in this incident, calling for swift and decisive measures.
"We urge [MDPD] to take equally swift and strong action against the officers who engaged in such despicable behavior," the Dolphins stated, while also commending the police department for releasing the footage promptly.
Hill’s detention occurred near Hard Rock Stadium just before the Dolphins faced off against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The South Florida Police Benevolent Association defended the officers, with union president Steadman Stahl claiming Hill was "uncooperative" and that his behavior during the stop prompted officers to take necessary precautions for their safety. According to Stahl, Hill was stopped for reckless driving that put others at risk and was detained for refusing to comply with officer instructions.

The police union emphasized that Hill’s refusal to sit on the ground led to the officers "redirecting" him to the ground, a move that has drawn criticism from both the team and fans. Hill was issued two traffic citations following the incident.
In the face of public scrutiny, one of the officers involved was placed on administrative duties pending further investigation. The Dolphins reiterated their commitment to standing with Hill and using this incident as an opportunity to push for positive change. They believe that football has the power to unite communities and are hopeful that this situation will contribute to a broader conversation about policing and justice.
