Here's What 192 House Dems Refuse to Disavow About Socialism

The House voted 220 to 192 to condemn socialism in all its forms. One hundred ninety-two Democrats voted against this resolution. Eight Democrats joined every single Republican to support the measure. These eight members include Reps. Kathy Castor, Vicente Gonzalez, and Henry Cuellar. Two other Democrats, Reps. Chrissy Houlahan and Maggie Goodlander, voted present. The non-binding resolution passed despite overwhelming opposition from the Democratic Party leadership.

Rep. Jeff Crank introduced the measure to denounce the Democratic Socialists of America. According to reports, he declared that the DSA platform opposes our republic directly. Crank argued that getting rid of the Senate and allowing non-citizens to vote are not consistent with our Constitution. He called the DSA an insidious movement within the Democratic Party.

Two moderate Democrats provided the narrow margin needed to bring the rule to the floor. Reps. Jared Golden and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez voted with 207 Republicans on the procedural rule. This vote passed by a single margin of 209 to 208. Five Republican hardliners voted against the rule needed to start the debate.

reports the resolution supports the SAVE America Act and asserts voting is for American citizens only. It cites the DSA support for noncitizen voting and abolishing the U.S. Senate. House Majority Leader Steve Scalise said they denounce the idea of people who are not citizens voting. notes that Rep. Kevin Kiley, along with nearly every Republican and independent, voted yes.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries said he voted no because of the SAVE Act. He told reporters he was not informed of the decision ahead of time. Jeffries told reporters, "I didn't get a heads up. You'll have to talk to Katherine". He was referring to House Minority Whip Katherine Clark.

Rep. Jim McGovern called the resolution nonsense while Republicans debated gas and grocery prices. McGovern inquired. GOP Rep. Bryan Steil shot back that some Democrats want government-run grocery stores. Steil added, "I think that's nuts". Four moderate Democrats tried to strip the SAVE Act endorsement from the resolution. The Washington Examiner states the GOP dominated House Rules Committee failed to adopt the amendment.
