Another Fires Hits Maui
Maui is still dealing with the aftermath of a devastating wildfire that tore through the island earlier this month, killing over one hundred people and leaving hundreds missing. The damages resulting from the blaze are estimated to be in the billions.
Recently, the island was thrown into panic again when an evacuation order was issued due to a new brush fire that broke out close to Lahaina, near the Kaanapali resort hotels. The order was aimed at residences living in the hills above Kaanapali, stretching from Anapuni Loop to West Mahipulu.
Fortunately, the fire was contained and the order was rescinded, leaving those living in the area relieved. Still, the incident serves as another reminder of the struggles Maui is going through right now.
The cause of the initial fire is still being determined by the National Fire Protection Association, but at least part of the blame lies with state and local officials over their incompetency in responding to the disaster. The emergency measures that were taken were likely too late, leading to dozens of lives lost and homes destroyed.
To make matters worse, the wind, rain, and humidity that accompanied the fire have only served to make recovery efforts more difficult. The infrastructure, including roads and bridges, that were damaged or destroyed in the blaze are not immediately repairable in their current state.
In the immediate future, the state and county are working together to provide immediate relief to those affected by the fire, including search and rescue operations, emergency housing and shelter, and medical and financial assistance. Officials are also urging caution when it comes to persons affected by the fire, asking them to use extreme care and discretion to minimize further loss of life and property.
At the same time, the county is looking towards the future. They are researching more efficient ways to respond to these types of disasters in the future, in the hopes of being better prepared for any future fires.
The tragedy of the wildfire has left many in the community here in Maui in shock and sadness. The fact that a second brush fire broke out so soon has only served to deepen the scars that the original fire has left on the island. Still, the resilient people of Maui have come together in the face of tragedy, and with the help of the state and local officials, they are hopeful that eventually, their beloved island will once again be restored to its former glory.
