AOC Dodges Question
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., has not yet made a trip to the border during the current Biden administration, dodging questions over why she has not done so while President Biden has visited the area.
During an interview with the New York Times, Ocasio-Cortez sidestepped the question about why she has not yet visited the southern border under Biden when asked.
"Well, this is something that we're actively planning on," Ocasio-Cortez told The Times. The Democrat did state she has made tours of our New York-area facilities.
The New York Democrat made several high-profile trips to the border during the Trump administration, visiting federal migrant detention facilities. Despite these visits, some Republicans such as Texas Gov Greg Abbott have said the presence of migrants in Texas cities has exceeded that seen under the Trump administration.
Ocasio-Cortez has frequently pushed Democratic narratives about the border and border officials, leading to dogpiling with the 2019 photos seen from her visit to the southern border.
Tensions are rising between President Biden and blue-state Democrats trying to stem the tide of migrants flowing from Republican-led border states. New York City Mayor Eric Adams, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Chicago and Boston are all battling the influx of migrants.
Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said he reached out to Biden and urged him to do more to respond to the crisis. Durbin has still yet to get an answer four months later.
Business leaders from major companies such as JPMorgan, BlackRock, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and dozens of other corporations also wrote an open letter to Biden and Congress. The letter urges them to provide more federal funding for migrant care.
"We write to support the request made by New York Governor Hochul for federal funding for educational, housing, security, and health care services to offset the costs that local and state governments are incurring with limited federal aid," the group wrote.
Since the start of the Biden administration, there has been continuous yet thick media coverage around the current state of the southern border.
Despite calls from fellow Democrats for her to visit, Ocasio-Cortez has remained silent on her possible visit to the southern border. Even though Ocasio-Cortez has yet to comment on whether she will visit the crisis as Biden has, plans for her visit may still be in the works.
