Betting Platform Makes Unprecedented Move Against George Santos
They planned to let him trade. But the betting platform Kalshi changed its mind Monday. They handed former Rep. George Santos the first lifetime ban in their history.
Why the sudden stop? Santos allegedly made more than $17,000 in illegal bets. He wagered on whether he would show up to President Donald Trump's State of the Union address. The platform says he broke the rules to make that money.
Here is the thing. Santos was expelled from Congress in 2023. He was not supposed to be in the gallery. Yet he placed large bets in February 2026. He bet he would go. Then he bet he would not.
Kalshi said he tried to move the market price. They found he made public posts to change how people bet. The platform stated: "The Kalshi Compliance Department has established reasonable cause to believe that George Santos engaged in trading activity in certain markets related to his attendance at the State of the Union Address".
He even asked his followers what to wear. The chance he would go spiked right after that post. He cashed out $3,400 that same day.
Then the story flipped. Days before the speech, he told fans he was going to be there for the State of the Union in the gallery. But the day before, he bet thousands that he would stay away. On the day of Trump's address, he told people he watched from an airport.
The company did not just ban him. They hit him with a fine. Kalshi imposed a $71,356 penalty on the former congressman. The ban is permanent. Santos failed to cooperate with the investigation. That lack of cooperation helped seal the deal.
Santos fought back on social media. He claimed the company broke its own rules. He wrote on X that Kalshi is an unserious company that violates its own notices and deadlines. He also said they gave a 30 day notice and then announced their frivolous nonsense.
Before this, the federal regulators stepped in too. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) looked into his trades. In July, they ordered him to give up his profits. He had to pay a $17,500 civil penalty. He also agreed to a three-year ban from trading on any prediction market. Santos settled that case without admitting guilt.
Hey @Kalshi thanks for the lifetime ban from your gambling platform.
Let’s see how much longer you guys are around for. 💋

He dismissed the claims on his own podcast before the settlement. When asked about the money, he shrugged. He said people lost money and some people made unexpected money.
The federal body says he misled people online. They claimed he should not bet on events he could change. Kalshi says his statements were false. The report noted that some of these included false or misleading statements. The Compliance Department found that Santos made these statements with the intent to manipulate the price of the Yes or No contracts that he intended to purchase.
