Biden Challenges Stephanopoulos Claim

First off, Stephanopoulos didn't hold back. He pointed out the stark reality of the current polling landscape, mentioning that Trump is ahead, even after being convicted of a felony. "You’re further behind now by any measure," Stephanopoulos said, highlighting the challenges Biden faces. He emphasized that inflation has decreased, yet Biden’s polling numbers continue to lag.

Biden's response was a mix of defiance and skepticism. He questioned the reliability of polling data, implying that it might not be as accurate as it once was. "You guys keep saying that. George, do you– look, you know polling better than anybody.

Do you think polling data is as accurate as it used to be?” he asked. Stephanopoulos, however, maintained that Trump leads in the popular vote and is even more ahead in battleground states, with Democrats in Senate and House races outpacing Biden.

What followed was a somewhat disjointed answer from Biden, where he acknowledged the challenges but also mixed up dates and events. He insisted that he could still win because he’s “running against a pathological liar.” Biden pointed to his busy schedule, mentioning his involvement in global issues like wars and NATO, as reasons for not having more aggressively challenged Trump’s claims.

When pressed on whether he believes he’s truly not behind in the polls, Biden remained firm. He claimed that most pollsters he talks to consider the race a tossup, and he downplayed the significance of certain polls where he is trailing.

"I think it’s in– all the pollsters I talk to tell me it’s a tossup. It’s a tossup. And when I’m behind, there’s only one poll I’m really far behind, CBS Poll and NBC, I mean, excuse me,” he stated, showing a bit of confusion in his reply.

Biden didn't shy away from expressing his belief in his qualifications for the presidency. He asserted that no one is more qualified to be president or to win the race than he is. Dismissing his critics, he firmly stated, “They’re just wrong. Look, Trump is a pathological liar. Trump is– he is– you ever seen anything Trump did that benefited sa– somebody else and not him? You can’t answer, I know.”
