BOOM! Company Caught Paying Men Less Than Women
The story we’re used to hearing is that women get paid less than men. In Google’s case, according to its own internal pay audit, it turned out male-identified Level 4 Software Engineers received less money than women in that same role.
As part of the study, Google looked for pay discrepancies in offers to new hires. This accounted for 49 percent of the total spent on pay adjustment.
Google also acknowledged adjusting pay directly is only part of the issue. “Because leveling, performance ratings, and promotion impact pay, this year, we are undertaking a comprehensive review of these processes to make sure the outcomes are fair and equitable for all employees,” Lauren Barbato, lead analyst for pay equity and people analytics, wrote in a blog post.
So, in short, in efforts to seem more politically correct- Google started to offer it’s female new hires more than men. Someone made that call without considering pay increases would eventually lead to men making way less.
Companies in all industries are under pressure to ensure pay equity between both genders and races. Earlier this year, Citigroup found that its female employees earn nearly 30 percent less than their male counterparts, and minority workers make 7 percent less.
But the tech sector has faced outsized scrutiny and a number of high-profile lawsuits on the issue. Google, for example, is facing a class-action suit after the Department of Labor revealed in an audit that the firm discriminates against its female workers, according to Fox Business.
Google has faced a number of gender pay gap accusations. In 2017, it tussled with the Labor Department over pay gap data, and it’s battling a discrimination lawsuit over wages. In November, thousands of employees walked out to protest pay and opportunity inequality, as well as a reported $90 million payout to former Android head Andy Rubin. He left the company amid accusations of sexual misconduct.
I think what most people will find is that it is becoming increasingly harder to claim that men are treated better than women in any aspects of life. Certainly not socially and now, perhaps not at work.
