Canada Implements More Gun Control Measures
Canada’s government has announced yet another step toward dismantling firearm rights, unveiling a ban on 324 additional “assault-style” firearms as part of its ongoing crackdown on civilian gun ownership.
Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc made it clear: these firearms “can no longer be used.” The ban is effective immediately, further cementing the country’s restrictive approach to gun control.
But it doesn’t stop there. The government is now exploring ways to ship these banned firearms to Ukraine, offering them up as a contribution to the war effort against Russia’s invasion. Defense Minister Bill Blair defended the move, saying, “Every bit of assistance we can offer to the Ukrainians is one step toward their victory.”
This latest round of restrictions comes with promises of tougher border security, stricter penalties for traffickers, and expanded firearms controls. It follows a pattern that began in May 2020, when Canada outlawed 1,500 firearm makes and models. That list has since ballooned to more than 2,000, with new models continually added.
LeBlanc’s justification is all too familiar. Citing Canada’s past tragedies, he declared, “Firearms designed for the battlefield plainly do not belong in our communities.”
This sentiment echoes the government’s belief that sweeping bans are the solution to curbing violent crime—a narrative that has been endlessly recycled despite questionable results.
Let’s talk about that irony. Guns banned in Canada under the guise of “public safety” are deemed suitable for Ukraine’s defense against one of the most formidable military aggressors in the world. Apparently, the tools too dangerous for law-abiding Canadians are just fine when it comes to arming foreign soldiers.
The real question here isn’t whether these bans will make Canadians safer—they likely won’t—but rather, how far the government intends to go in dismantling lawful firearm ownership. Incrementalism is the name of the game.
What started as a ban on “military-style” rifles has evolved into a sweeping disarmament agenda that chips away at the rights of responsible citizens while doing little to address the root causes of violence.
