Dem DA Locks Up Man Defending His Home
A man in Shelby County, Tennessee found himself behind bars this week after fighting back against burglars who were trying to steal a van outside of his home.
The man, whose identity has not yet been revealed to the public, was notified by his surveillance system shortly after 2 a.m. on Saturday that several people were outside his home using burglary tools in order to break into a van. He went outside to investigate, and that was when the burglars opened fire toward him as he stood beneath the porch light, according to Fox 13 Memphis.
In security video obtained by the news outlet, the homeowner and the burglars exchange multiple shots with each other. The assailants then flee the scene, and the man returned to his home.
However, upon the arrival of deputies, the man’s wife claims that officers began interrogating her husband rather than seeking to apprehend the actual criminals.
“When they were talking to him, from what I saw, it was like they were trying to find ways to charge him,” she told Fox 13. “That doesn’t sound right. Why would you put pressure on the victim when you should put pressure for the suspects to be found.”
The man eventually did get charged with reckless endangerment, although he was later released, and his family is now hoping the charge is dropped. This case has been getting a lot of attention on social media, with many people, including Heritage Foundation senior fellow Amy Swearer, wondering why the homeowner is being charged when it should have been the burglars who were in the wrong.
“I'm floored that the home owner here is being charged with ‘reckless endangerment,’” Swearer said on Twitter. “The arguments from police seem absurd on their face to me. The only people he endangered were...the ones shooting at him. And he's 100% entitled to ‘endanger’ them.”
At this time, it is not known whether the police have any leads as to who the burglars are, or whether they will be found anytime soon. For now, the Shelby County man remains a victim to the situation, and his family is hoping that justice will be served soon.
