DHS Deploys Special Federal Unit To Guard Monuments, Here's What You Need To Know
It's about time! The Department of Homeland Security launched a new taskforce to protect national monuments. The group will amp up their precinct around monuments during the 4th of July holiday.
“The upcoming July 4th holiday weekend has the potential for increased disruptive activity at specific locations across the country that could threaten our personnel and the Federal facilities and property they protect,” a soon-to-be-released memo penned by acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf, and obtained by Fox News, says. “DHS will be forward-leaning in preparing to protect federal facilities and property.”
Rapid Deployment Teams (RDTs) from the Protecting American Communities Task Force (PACT), and consisting of law enforcement officers specially trained in areas such as crowd control and riot control, will be dispatched to Portland, Seattle and Washington D.C.
Additional RDTs will be dispatched regionally so that they can be flown into any other area within a few hours should unrest spark up in other cities across the U.S.
This move comes after the Trump administration vowed to take a more aggressive stance against people who desecrate historical federal monuments.
This is after weeks of monuments being vandalized and torn down while local officials do very little to protect them. Some even support the vandals. Shuch is the case with the Abraham Lincoln emancipation monument in Boston where commissioners just voted to remove the statue of Lincoln.
Lincoln's statue has stood in Boston park since 1879 and was put in the park by former slaves who, using their own money, commissioned the creation of the statue to commemorate emancipation. Removing the statue seems like a defilement to their memory- not just to the former president.
Some residents have claimed that the statue is an offence because the former slave depicted in it is kneeling while Lincoln stands over him. They fail to realize that the former slave is in the process of standing up and that Lincoln lovingly has his hand over him to help him up.
