George Soros: A Billionaire’s Attempt to Buy Global Media Influence
A recent discovery by the Media Research Center (MRC) uncovered the immense power of one individual, George Soros, and the hundreds of millions of dollars he's funneled into global news outlets and activist media. This should be a wake-up call to all those who value free speech and transparency in media coverage.
This is more than just an assault on our democratic values, it's a challenge to the very foundation of our free and open society. By using his money to inject radical messaging into global media coverage, Soros attempts to control public opinion and censor facts and honest discussion.
For example, one outlet supported by Soros – openDemocracy – justified Palestinian terrorist rockets fired into Israel as “a necessary counter-discourse” to what it deemed Israeli “supremacist privilege and ideological system embodied in the government.” Meanwhile Project Syndicate – another organization receiving millions from Soros – published propaganda penned by former Iranian president Hassan Rouhani who threatened further conflict with America if nuclear agreement wasn't reached.
Unfortunately, current regulations on political spending by individuals such as Soros are inadequate. The Federal Election Commission only requires disclosure when an individual gives more than $200 directly towards a candidate running for office but doesn't apply when large donations are made indirectly through third party organizations like those supported by Soros which can easily hide its origin from public view.
What's needed is an overhaul of the existing laws to close this loophole and protect our freedom of speech. Penalties for violations related to illegal foreign contributions must be increased and all political actors—from candidates running for office to groups engaging in advocacy campaigns to private donors—should be required to disclose all donations received above certain thresholds so that citizens can make informed decisions when it comes to voting.
We must take a stand against the political manipulation and censorship of media, and with the right regulations, we can ensure that powerful people are not able to influence our democratic process through their wealth. We must defend and protect our freedom of speech and ensure that our media is open and honest.
Politicians need to stand up and close these loopholes on behalf of the American people. This type of manipulation goes beyond election interference and needs to become a top priority for lawmakers.
