Joe Biden Confided in Jill Before His Infamous Debate
The publication of Jill Biden’s new memoir is shedding fresh light on one of the most consequential moments of the 2024 presidential campaign: Joe Biden’s disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump that ultimately accelerated the end of his re-election bid.
In View from the East Wing, released Tuesday, the former first lady recounts her concerns in the hours leading up to the June 27, 2024, CNN debate in Atlanta. According to Jill Biden, she noticed that the president appeared unusually exhausted before he ever stepped onto the stage.
Ahead of the debate, she writes, Joe Biden acknowledged that something felt wrong physically, even if he could not identify the cause.
“I don’t know, I just don’t feel well,” he reportedly told her.
The concerns deepened during preparations for the event. Jill Biden recalls that even a makeup session failed to improve his appearance.
“He looked like clay,” she wrote, adding that he appeared “strangely monochromatic.”
When the debate began, she immediately sensed trouble.
“I immediately noticed that Joe didn’t look good,” she wrote. “He didn’t seem himself from the opening.”
What followed became one of the defining political moments of the election cycle. Millions of Americans watched as Biden struggled to complete thoughts, lost his train of thought at several points, and delivered answers that left both supporters and critics stunned. Among the most widely discussed moments was his declaration that “we finally beat Medicare,” a remark that quickly became symbolic of the broader concerns surrounding his performance.
According to the memoir, Jill Biden was alarmed as the debate unfolded and privately wondered whether her husband might be suffering from a medical emergency. She later revealed that she considered possibilities ranging from a stroke to the possibility that he had somehow been drugged.
In the days that followed, the White House offered a series of explanations for the president’s condition. Officials initially cited a cold, then pointed to lingering fatigue from overseas travel, and later suggested that intensive debate preparation may have contributed to his poor showing.
Despite widespread criticism, Jill Biden remained publicly supportive. After meeting her husband on stage following the debate, she later accompanied him to a campaign stop at a local Waffle House, where she attempted to reassure supporters.
“Joe — you did such a great job,” she told him publicly. “You answered every question, you knew all the facts.”
That comment drew significant scrutiny at the time, but Jill Biden defended it during a Monday appearance on NBC’s Today.
“I had to support him. I’m his wife,” she said. “I’m not going to get out on the stage there and say, ‘Joe, you really screwed that up.’ We have all our supporters there.”
The debate proved to be a turning point. Pressure from Democratic lawmakers, donors, and party officials intensified in the weeks that followed, with many urging Biden to step aside. Less than a month later, on July 21, 2024, he formally ended his campaign.
In one of the memoir’s most revealing passages, Jill Biden recounts a private conversation with her husband after the decision was made.
“Jilly, I had no choice,” he told her.
