The controversy surrounding Disney’s live-action Snow White intensified this week as new details emerged about behind-the-scenes tensions between lead actress Rachel Zegler and the studio. A scathing rebuke from Jonah Platt — son of producer Marc Platt and brother of actor Ben Platt — further fueled the fire, casting a harsh light on the ongoing fallout from Zegler’s politically charged social media activity.

According to Variety, Marc Platt flew to New York to confront Zegler after a series of posts promoting pro-Palestinian views and criticizing former President Donald Trump went viral, drawing ire from audiences and threatening the film’s box office performance. Jonah Platt confirmed the report and defended his father’s actions in a blistering Instagram comment, calling Zegler’s behavior “immature” and “narcissistic,” and accusing her of jeopardizing the work of “tens of thousands” involved in the film’s production.

Jonah’s remarks followed growing frustration within Disney and industry circles over Zegler’s repeated departures from traditional promotional protocol. Despite signing a multimillion-dollar contract, Zegler continued to inject personal political views into film marketing — a move the studio reportedly viewed as undermining the commercial prospects of a project with a $270 million budget.

Opening to $87 million globally, Snow White fell far short of expectations. While topping the box office, the return is widely seen as underwhelming given the scale of investment. The film has faced challenges since inception, including backlash over the casting of non-dwarf actors in the roles of the Seven Dwarfs and Zegler’s widely criticized comments about the 1937 original, which she labeled “dated” and its prince “a stalker.”

The situation escalated further after Zegler posted “Free Palestine” in a public message thanking fans — a move that prompted death threats against Israeli co-star Gal Gadot. Gadot, who served in the Israeli military, became the subject of a security response from Disney, which reportedly funded additional protection for the actress and later hired a social media specialist to vet Zegler’s future posts.

Insiders also pointed to growing tensions between the co-stars. According to Variety, Zegler referred to Gadot as a “professional pageant queen” after their Oscars appearance — a comment seen internally as dismissive and unprofessional.

Despite the mounting backlash, both actresses appeared at the scaled-back premiere on March 15. But the damage to Disney’s rollout was already done.

The Platt family’s public engagement in the controversy signals just how seriously the fallout is being taken behind the scenes. While Jonah Platt’s defense of his father received mixed reactions online — with critics mocking his tone and perceived overreaction — his remarks highlight the increasing risk studios face when talent veers off-message during promotion.
