Logan Airport Being Used As Shelter
Boston Logan Airport is witnessing an increase in the number of migrants seeking shelter, with families lining the baggage claim area, surrounded by suitcases, and using thin blankets as makeshift mattresses. New photos reveal that over a hundred migrants are now spending their nights sleeping on the airport floor, a noticeable uptick from the dozens sheltered there just a few months ago.
"We continue to see migrants at the airport. They come to Logan a number of ways. They also arrive at Logan at all hours," a representative from MassPort previously told Boston 25 News. The influx has highlighted the challenges of providing adequate care for this growing population. Without sufficient staff or resources, migrants are transported daily to state welcome centers and then brought back to the airport at night.
This is inside Logan Airport in Boston. These are illegals. This is insanity.
Do you know how stupid you have to be to vote for a democrat at this point? Voting has consequences. You’re paying for this! pic.twitter.com/qQaq3ZMe2n

Conditions at the airport are far from ideal. Migrants endure cold air conditioning, hard floors, bright lights, and constant airport announcements that disrupt their sleep, as reported by WBUR. The situation at Logan Airport has been ongoing since last year, following the state's shelters reaching their 7,500 family capacity in November, leading to waitlists and forcing many to use the airport as a temporary refuge.
In response to the increasing migrant population, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced in May that a former prison, located about an hour southwest of Boston, would be converted into a shelter for around 400 homeless families, including 150 spaces specifically for migrant families.

MassPort, responsible for the airport's operations, could not be reached for comment.
Boston Logan is not alone in this crisis. Airports across the country have become makeshift shelters for migrants. San Diego International Airport has housed hundreds of migrants sleeping on its floors, as have Chicago's O'Hare Airport and the airport in El Paso, Texas.
The use of airports as temporary shelters underscores the broader challenges faced by states in managing the surge in migrant arrivals. The makeshift accommodations at Logan Airport reflect a broader systemic issue that requires urgent attention and resources. While the conversion of facilities like the former prison is a step toward addressing the crisis, the immediate conditions faced by migrants at the airport remain dire.
