McCarthy Doesn't Mince Words Ups Ante For Garland Impeachment
The U.S. House of Representatives may be initiating an impeachment inquiry against the scandal-plagued Attorney General Merrick Garland. The inquiry centers around whether or not the claims of former IRS Criminal Supervisory Special Agent Gary A. Shapley Jr. are accurate.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy indicated on Twitter Sunday that the House GOP could initiate an impeachment inquiry against Garland. The inquiry comes amidst Shapley's allegations that U.S. Attorney David Weiss wanted to appoint a special counsel for the Department of Justice’s investigation into Hunter Biden.
McCarthy outlined a timeline for the potential inquiry on Fox News’s Fox & Friends Monday morning. "By July 6, because of the allegations from the IRS, because the whistleblowers ... what [Garland] is saying and what David Weiss is saying privately are two different things. And if it comes true, what the IRS whistleblower’s saying, we’re going to start impeachment inquiries on the attorney general,” McCarthy said.
Shapley has stated that in an October meeting, Weiss stated he couldn't press charges against Hunter Biden in Washington, D.C., without the approval of the U.S. attorney in that jurisdiction. However, Garland has claimed that Weiss had “complete authority to make all decisions on his own.”
Shapley has named six witnesses to Weiss's claim — Baltimore FBI Special Agent in Charge Tom Sobocinski, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Ryeshia Holley, IRS Assistant Special Agent in Charge Gary Shapley and Special Agent in Charge Darrell Waldon — independently corroborating the account.
For now, Schapley and his team contend that it is up to Weiss and the Justice Department to reconcile the evidence of his alleged October 7, 2022 statements with Garland’s claims. Other potential witnesses may be called before the inquiry is fully launched.
Questions remain as to whether the claims of the whistleblowers will be substantiated and the House will move forward with an official impeachment inquiry against Garland. The nation will be watching to see if McCarthy's July 6th proclamation paves the way for an official request from the House for the inquiry.
