McCarthy Makes A Strong Statement During Interview
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) has reiterated his call for an impeachment inquiry into Attorney General Merrick Garland’s handling of the Hunter Biden investigation.
McCarthy made the comments during an appearance on FNC’s “Fox and Friends”, where he was pressed on the topic by host Brian Kilmeade. Kilmeade pointed to a report from Miranda Devine claiming that former Vice President Joe Biden had met with his business partners twelve times.
“Well, you apparently don’t follow me on Twitter because yesterday I laid out very clearly, by July 6, because of the allegation from the IRS because of the whistleblowers and the DOJ are Garland, what he is saying and what David Weiss are saying privately are two different things,” McCarthy said. “And if it comes true what the IRS whistleblower is saying, we’re going to start impeachment inquires on the attorney general because it – a matter of fact, it shows that.”
The California Congressman has expressed concern that Garland has been hindering the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) investigation into the President’s son. Indeed, it was reported that the Department of Justice (DOJ) had stepped in to stop the IRS from issuing summonses to people with information concerning Hunter Biden’s finances.
“As I have said before, there is nothing more important to me than protecting our Constitutional system of government by ensuring no one receives special treatment,” McCarthy said. “Presidential administrations, particularly those of our opponents, must be held to account when they undermine the rule of law to protect themselves and their allies from accountability.”
The Speaker went on to blast the Biden administration’s “obstruction and stonewalling” of certain investigations, noting that he had provided Congress with “evidence and a request for information” concerning the AG’s handling of the case.
“The Biden Administration’s obstruction and stonewalling of information concerning DOJ’s interference in the Hunter Biden investigation and any attempts to interfere with the work of the IRS or other federal law enforcement agencies is a serious offense that should be investigated, and I am committed to upholding the rule of law,” he said.
The announcement of a potential impeachment inquiry of Garland comes amid calls for an independent counsel to investigate the Hunter Biden matter. Many members of Congress, including McCarthy, have questioned the AG’s ability to stay impartial in such a politically charged environment, in part because of his and the former Vice President’s long-standing relationship.
It remains to be seen if Congress will move forward with an impeachment inquiry, however, if the IRS’s whistleblower’s claims are substantiated it could result in a move towards accountability that many on Capitol Hill have called for in recent days.
We need to get to the facts, and that includes reconciling these clear disparities. U.S. Attorney David Weiss must provide answers to the House Judiciary Committee.
