NBC Reporter Comment Stirs Debate
NBC News anchor Lester Holt wasted no time pointing fingers at former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance, in the wake of the second assassination attempt on Trump’s life in just two months.
Hours after Secret Service agents thwarted yet another attack, Holt suggested that the heated rhetoric coming from Trump and Vance had contributed to the violent climate, particularly in relation to their comments on the growing Haitian migrant crisis in Ohio.
Holt linked their remarks to broader unrest, claiming, “Today’s apparent assassination attempt comes amid increasingly fierce rhetoric on the campaign trail itself. Mr. Trump, his running mate JD Vance continue to make baseless claims about Haitian immigrants in Ohio.”
He also noted that bomb threats had surfaced in the same Ohio town recently, implying a connection between the inflammatory rhetoric and these threats to local schools and hospitals.

Holt’s comments were echoed by other media figures, including CNN's Dana Bash and CBS's Margaret Brennan, who both drew direct lines between the words of Trump and Vance and the ongoing tensions in Ohio. They argued that by amplifying concerns about the impact of the migrant influx on local communities, Trump and Vance were fueling the flames of hostility that could lead to threats and even violence.
Senator JD Vance didn’t hold back in his response, challenging the media’s narrative. He defended the concerns of his Ohio constituents, saying their frustrations over the sudden surge in migrants were legitimate and should not be dismissed as baseless.
Vance then took aim at Bash’s reporting, accusing her of sounding “more like a Democratic propagandist than an American journalist.” His remarks underscored the growing divide between conservative leaders and mainstream media, especially when it comes to issues of immigration and public safety.
What Holt and others failed to acknowledge, however, was the equally fiery rhetoric coming from prominent Democrats. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, for instance, recently posted inflammatory comments on social media, attacking Republicans as the “party of a national abortion ban” and pushing against Trump’s so-called “Project 2025.” While Jeffries later followed up by denouncing political violence, his harsh criticism of Trump’s base only added to the tense political atmosphere.
The focus on Trump and Vance’s rhetoric, while ignoring similar statements from the left, highlights the selective scrutiny applied to political discourse. The heated words coming from both sides of the aisle contribute to a charged environment, and yet, only one side seems to bear the blame in the eyes of mainstream outlets like NBC.
