New Border Crossing Report Will Make You Proud, This Is Only The Beginning
Democrats have bent slightly to some of Trump’s demands about the border crisis. Not much, but just enough that we can see his plans begin to work. After watching Democrats fight Trump tooth and nail at the expense of taxpayers, Americans finally get a glips at some real results.
Border arrests, a metric for illegal crossings, plummeted to 51,000 in August, according to preliminary government figures obtained by POLITICO Wednesday, down more than 60 percent since a peak in May. And border watchers say it’s largely because of an agreement Trump struck with Mexico in June. Mexican authorities, backed by the newly formed National Guard, are now cracking down on migrants traversing Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala, monitoring river crossings and stopping buses carrying migrants from Central America through Mexico. At the same time, the U.S. is making tens of thousands of asylum seekers wait in Mexico while their applications are considered.
The decline in border traffic — if sustained — could amount to a major victory for Trump as he heads into the 2020 election. Perhaps more important, the experimental measures taken by his administration could reshape immigration enforcement for years to come.
Trump’s correction with the previously flawed immigration policie is just one of the tools the President has used to produce results. His work to improve the relationship between the US and Mexico, of course, is another. However, the question on everyone’s mind currently is “is it sustainable?”.
Without the border wall, there is a crucial piece to Trump’s overall plan to improve illegal immigration issues missing. Keep in mind, that 51,000 people crossing might be down from the previous months but it’s still an unacceptable amount of illegals able to cross.
As Hotair points out a physical barrier channeling people toward legal crossing points could still cut those numbers down massively. We don’t need to have the entire border walled off all at once. Some of the more inhospitable areas see very little traffic. But we could be doing far better than we are now. And we should make sure that happens.
Hopefully, voters won’t lose steam by accepting ‘some improvement’ and help Trump going into the 2020 elections to finish his project.
