New Jersey Governor Admits Hundreds of Non-Citizens Voted Illegally
New Jersey Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill has admitted that hundreds of non-citizens voted in her state. She says a "software error" caused the problem. This is a massive failure of trust in our voting system.
Sherrill stated that around 400 non-citizens cast illegal ballots since 2023. The error happened because the state's Motor Vehicle Commission system failed. It registered thousands of people who said they were not citizens.
The Glitch That Broke the System
The numbers are staggering and deeply troubling. More than 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly added to voter rolls. This happened between June 2023 and June 2024. Sherrill told the Daily Signal that roughly 400 of those people voted.
The system registered them even when they answered "no" to a simple question. They were asked if they were citizens when getting a driver's license. The New York Post reports that the software ignored their answer anyway.
Sherrill blamed her predecessor, former Gov. Phil Murphy, for the breakdown. She said the failure occurred under his watch. However, she insists accountability starts now. She ordered an investigation and the removal of these names from the rolls.
This failure didn't occur under my watch, but accountability starts now, Sherrill said to Gothamist. She claimed she was "appalled by the reckless failures" that allowed this. She also criticized the lack of transparency from the previous team.
Restoring Trust in Our Vote
We need to demand better from our leaders. A software error is not an excuse for illegal voting. The system must verify who is allowed to vote. Every citizen deserves to know their vote counts.
Sherrill said she is a military veteran and former prosecutor. She swore an oath to defend the Constitution. That oath means protecting the integrity of our elections. We must hold her to that standard.
The state is hiring an independent firm to investigate the snafu. They will find out which elections were affected. The findings will be released to the public. We deserve to see the full truth.
Our communities rely on fair elections. When non-citizens vote, it undermines the voice of legal citizens. We must fix the system so this never happens again. Trust is hard to earn and easy to lose.
