NYC Mayor Imposes Migrant shelter
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced that he will be implementing a curfew on illegal immigrants residing in the city's shelters. The curfew will go into effect on Monday and will require illegal immigrants to remain inside shelters from 11 pm to 6 am. This decision comes after a dramatic increase in criminal activity involving illegal immigrants in the city, including the recent attack on NYPD officers and the moped gang crime ring responsible for at least 62 robberies.
According to the New York Post, the curfew will be imposed on 20 shelters in Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and the Bronx, affecting approximately 3,600 illegal immigrants. Nearly half of these individuals are single adult males. This move by Mayor Adams aligns with the curfews already in place at homeless shelters in the city.
City Hall issued a statement regarding the decision, saying that New York City continues to lead the nation in managing the national humanitarian crisis of illegal immigration. This includes prioritizing the health and safety of both asylum seekers in the city's care and New Yorkers who live in the surrounding areas of the emergency shelters.
The statement further elaborated that starting this week, a curfew policy will be instituted at HPD emergency sites. This will be in line with the curfews already implemented at traditional DHS shelters and NYCEM respite sites that serve migrants and long-time New Yorkers experiencing homelessness. The policy aims to allow for more efficient capacity management for migrants in the city's care.
According to the New York Post, the Adams administration had previously placed curfews on four illegal immigrant shelters back in January. This decision came after complaints from local residents about the increase in crime and migrant beggars knocking on their doors at all hours of the day.
The majority of shelters that will be under curfew are located in Manhattan, including the Imperial Hotel, The Gatsby Hotel, and the Redford Hotel. These shelters have been known to be hotspots for criminal activity involving illegal immigrants, which has caused concern for the safety of residents in the surrounding areas.
Mayor Adams has been facing pressure from both citizens and other officials to take action against the rise in crime involving illegal immigrants. With this curfew, he hopes to address some of these concerns and improve safety for both the migrants and the local community.
In recent months, there has been a surge in illegal immigration at the southern border, leading to an increase in the number of migrants being sent to cities such as New York. This has put a strain on resources and has forced the city to create emergency shelters to house these individuals. However, with the increase in crime, there have been calls for stricter measures to be taken.
The curfew decision has received mixed reactions, with some commending Mayor Adams for taking action and others expressing concerns about its impact on the migrants. Some argue that a curfew will only further criminalize the already vulnerable population and may not effectively address the root causes of the issue.
As the curfew goes into effect, it remains to be seen how it will impact the safety and well-being of both the migrants and the local community. Mayor Adams has stated that this is a necessary step to manage the current crisis, and he will continue to monitor the situation and make necessary adjustments as needed.
