Paxton Issues Statement Accusing Dem Of Violating Court Order
Beto O’Rourke may have just crossed the line from political grandstander to potential jail inmate—and if Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has his way, that’s exactly where this road leads.
The latest twist in the Texas Democrats’ quorum-busting saga centers on a court order that O’Rourke appears to have treated as little more than a suggestion. After a group of Democrat legislators fled the state to avoid voting on redistricting, O’Rourke jumped in to raise funds for their extended out-of-state stay.
But according to Paxton, those donations weren’t for political advocacy—they were for personal expenses, an alleged violation of Texas law on fraudulent fundraising.
Texas District Court Judge Megan Fahey saw enough merit in Paxton’s argument to issue a temporary restraining order blocking the fundraising while the case proceeds. Rather than quietly comply, O’Rourke all but dared the court to act, declaring at an event, “There are no refs in this game. F*** the rules.” He then continued to promote his fundraising outfit, Powered by People, in open defiance of the order.
BREAKING: I'm taking action to hold Robert Francis O'Rourke in contempt for violating a court order and scamming Texans.
Beto is about to find out that running your mouth and ignoring the rule of law has consequences in Texas.
It's time to lock him up. pic.twitter.com/JZO4cbBkt1

That defiance has now earned him a motion for contempt, carrying the possibility of up to six months in jail. It’s a stunning display of hubris from a man who has already flamed out in races for the Senate, the presidency, and the Texas governorship. Losing in court and then publicly taunting the judge is not exactly the legal strategy of champions.
Whether O’Rourke is aiming for martyrdom in the eyes of MSNBC and the progressive donor base is anyone’s guess, but the consequences here are real.
If Republicans fail to enforce the law out of fear of optics, they’ll simply invite more of this behavior in the future.
Meanwhile, the Democrats still holed up in blue-state hotels continue to deny representation to their constituents. When they finally do return to Texas, Paxton and legislative leadership have every reason to act swiftly—enforcing the arrest warrants already passed, hauling them to the Capitol to restore a quorum, and keeping bribery investigations alive.
