Police Identified Assailant That Allegedly Attacked Conservatives At Berkeley
On Friday, police announced that they have identified the man caught on video physically assaulting a field representative working for the conservative Leadership Institute on the UC-Berkeley campus — but have yet to release details about his identity, including if he is a student at the school, according to the Daily Wire.
In video posted on Twitter by Turning Point USA’s Charlie Kirk last week, as well as additional footage published by Campus Reform, which is owned and operated by the Leadership Institute, a man wearing a black T-shirt and carrying a backpack repeatedly attacks a smaller man, Hayden Williams, who was helping TPUSA recruit students on the campus.
In a statement released Friday afternoon, campus spokesperson Dan Mogulof said UCPD had identified a potential suspect in this incident. According to Mogulof, the suspect does not seem to be a student or affiliate of the campus.
Mogulof added that the victim had joined members of a student group as part of an “advocacy training program.”
“The fact that the victim was not a campus affiliate has no bearing on this case. He had every right to be on campus, and every right to express his point of view,” Mogulof said in the statement.
“Some students nearby tabling were laughing, even one guy was smiling while I was being attacked and trying to hand me his flyer as a joke,” Hayden Williams told Campus Reform. “The idea is free speech has consequences…. which include you getting assaulted if they find you promoting ideas others don’t agree with.”
A student who asked to remain anonymous and was at the scene after the alleged victim got punched said someone also tore apart their signs.
“As I approached the table I could see our TPUSA pins all over the floor, our signs were torn apart, Hayden’s eye was red, and his nose was bleeding,” the student told Campus Reform.
As of yet, it doesn’t seem like an arrest has been made, though the person is clearly easily identifiable as seen in the video below:
Dan Mogulof, assistant vice chancellor for the Office of Communications and Public Affairs for UC-Berkeley told Campus Reform that while he has not seen confirmation of the assault, he condemns the behavior.
