Should An Elderly Woman Be Jailed For Feeding Stray Cats? One Community Said “YES”
Some say stray cats can be a nuisance but would you call the authorities on your elderly neighbor for feeding them? Better yet, would you feed animals that someone abandoned in your neighborhood? That’s what happened to a 79-year-old Ohio woman who spent 10 days in jail for feeding stray cats.
Nancy Segula of Garfield Heights said she started feeding them a few years ago when the cats would visit her on her back porch.
“I used to have a neighbor that had a couple of cats, and he moved away, so he left them. I would always feed them and care for them because I was worried about them, and I’m a cat lover,” Segula told WJW.
But Segula’s neighbors called the authorities who issued her a citation. Her latest citation required her to appear before Magistrate Jeffrey Short last week. He sentenced her to 10 days in the Cuyahoga County Jail.
“I couldn’t believe what my mother was telling me. She gets 10 days in the county jail, I couldn’t believe it,” said Dave Pawlowski, her son. “I’m sure people hear about the things that happen downtown in that jail. And they are going to let my 79-year-old mother go there?”
In Garfield Heights, it is illegal to feed stray dogs and cats under ordinance 505.23. However, Segula doesn’t feel the punishment fits the crime.
“It’s too much of a sentence for me for what I’m doing. When there are so many people out there that do bad things,” she said.
It took only 4 citations to land this grandmother in jail but the arrest has sparked a debate on social media that continues to rage on. Most people blame the previous owners who abandoned their pets when they moved. However, the undertone issue here is how quickly people are to call the authorities on others to avoid personal confrontation.
Here’s a novel idea: Why not help your kindhearted neighbor, instead? We have convicted politicians roaming free but its grandma we throw behind bars?
Please, correct me if you think I am wrong.
