There’s A New Politician Complaining About Fake News
Gossip? In Washington? Couldn’t be.
Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez accused mainstream news source of reporting gossip about her.
Ocasio tweeted Tuesday: “One disappointment about DC is the gossip that masquerades as ‘reporting.’ This story has: – Not a SINGLE named or verifiable source – Only ONE on-the-record comment, which is a denial. My dad had a name for junk articles like this: ‘Birdcage lining.’”
This comes after news outlet Politco published an article titled, Ocasio-Cortez weighs a new primary target: Hakeem Jeffries.

My dad had a name for junk articles like this:
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@Ocasio2018) December 18, 2018
Fox News reported,
The news outlet’s vice president of marketing and communications, Brad Dayspring, stood by Politico’s journalism: “It’s hard to know what the criticism of the piece is, since the congresswoman-elect doesn’t specify (nor has she or anyone from her staff asked for a correction). We stand by our reporting.”
The Polito article claims that Ocasio-Cortez recruited an African-American woman to challenge Hakeem Jeffries as caucus chairman.
Politico reported in the article,
Challenging Jeffries would open an audacious new front in Ocasio-Cortez’s efforts to steer the direction of the Democratic Party, pitting her and allies against a rising-star African-American Democrat seen by some as a potential future speaker of the House. It would also set off another intra-party New York City brawl — Jeffries’ Brooklyn district is just a few miles south of Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx-and-Queens seat — that would peak just as Democrats hope to rally around a presidential nominee in mid-2020.
But I think there is a problem hidden in Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s response to the article in her tweet. She didn’t refute the claim.
All she did was complain about no sources being named to back up the claims. What she could and should have done instead was refute the notion that she will be challenging Hakeen Jeffries and pledge not to do that very thing.
Being straightforward about the situation would have got Ocasio-Cortez much further and a little more respect than her whining on Twitter about the whole situation.
