Trump Calls Brazil Election Rigged As Bolsonaro Demands Annulment
President Donald Trump said Monday that Brazil's recent election "looked like another rigged election, frankly." This comment came after President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva won with 51.79 percent of the vote.
Senator Flávio Bolsonaro also rejected the outcome, calling it "impossible" to recognize the results. His campaign team plans to ask for the results to be annulled.
The controversy centers on a specific court order from Supreme Federal Tribunal Justice Cristiano Zanin. According to Breitbart, this judge extended voting hours by two hours.
At the Lula campaign's request, Justice Zanin took this action. Senator Bolsonaro called it "not normal" for a judge to "change the rules of the game" during an election.
He noted the alteration occurred "with the stroke of a pen, at the request of an ex-partner". The senator described the results as "unacceptable" under these new conditions.
President Trump echoed these concerns on Monday. According to him, "Elections have to be indisputable — and it looked very bad to me". The Washington Examiner reported his full reaction to the vote count.
Trump also told the Washington Times that the runoff election looked "rigged" and "corrupt." He made these remarks after Lula pulled off a stunning comeback against Bolsonaro.
Official results from the Superior Electoral Tribunal show Lula secured 51.79 percent of the votes. Bolsonaro received 48.21 percent of the total vote share.
Ricardo Sennes from the Atlantic Council's Latin America Center noted the unusual nature of the race. He said, "It was quite a surprise." This marks the first instance where a runoff outcome reversed the first round result.
The initial round of voting included multiple other candidates running to the president's right. This context matters when looking at how the final numbers shifted so dramatically.
Senator Bolsonaro's team will now formally request the annulment of the election results. They argue the judicial intervention violated fair play standards.
President Trump's comments highlight a broader concern about election integrity. He believes the process must remain clear and free from manipulation.
This situation shows how quickly a close race can turn into a legal battle. The next steps will depend on how the Brazilian courts handle the annulment request.
