Trump Gives Remarks During Texas Visit
Former President Donald Trump gave a visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas on Thursday. While speaking on the topic of illegal immigration, a hot-button issue in the run-up to November’s election, Trump shared a new moniker for California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom. Newsom is currently serving as a top campaign surrogate for President Joe Biden and is widely seen as a potential White House contender in the future.
During his visit, Trump took a swipe at Newsom while critiquing policies that he argued were driving illegal immigration into the United States. “You look at what this Governor New Scum from California — isn’t that his name? New Scum. What he’s done to California is unbelievable,” Trump said.
While the nickname may have been amusing to some, others saw it as a continuation of Trump’s habit of bestowing mocking nicknames upon his political opponents, dating back to the 2016 Republican nomination contest. However, it remains to be seen if this latest moniker for Newsom will stick.

The visit to the U.S.-Mexico border came as Trump and Biden jousted over the issue of immigration. Trump’s visit to Eagle Pass, the epicenter of a standoff between Texas and the Biden administration over how to deal with migrants and illegal crossings, took place at the same time as Biden’s visit to the border in Brownsville, Texas.
Trump, who has been a vocal critic of Biden’s policies on immigration, argued that the surge in illegal immigration was directly related to the changes made by the new administration. This came as no surprise, as the topic of illegal immigration was a key platform for Trump during the 2020 presidential election.
During his CPAC speech last weekend, Trump also took a shot at Newsom while calling President Biden “Crooked Joe.” He said, “A lot of people think Gavin Newsom is going to run. In a certain way, I hope so. I hope so. Because he’s destroyed California.”
Newsom, however, has been vocal in his criticism of Trump, branding him “weakness masquerading as strength” and claiming that the former president is “more unhinged” than he was a few years ago. During an interview on NBC’s “Meet The Press,” which aired on Sunday, Newsom also rejected the notion that Democrats are underestimating Trump’s relevance in the 2024 election.
When asked about Newsom’s own potential presidential aspirations, the governor was quick to dismiss them, saying, “100%. It’s not even an interesting conversation.” Despite his dismissal, Newsom has been mentioned as a potential Democratic candidate for President in the future.
As the political landscape continues to shift and evolve, both Trump and Newsom remain in the spotlight. Only time will tell if the nickname “New Scum” will catch on, but what is certain is that both men will continue to be key players in the ongoing political battles that shape our nation.
