It’s that time again; time for California to screw something else up and steal more money from its citizens.

The Mercury News is reporting that,

State regulators have been ginning up a scheme to charge a fee for text messaging on mobile phones to help support programs that make phone service accessible to the poor. The wireless industry and business groups have been working to defeat the proposal, now scheduled for a vote next month by the California Public Utilities Commission.

“It’s a dumb idea,” said Jim Wunderman, president of the Bay Area Council business-sponsored advocacy group. “This is how conversations take place in this day and age, and it’s almost like saying there should be a tax on the conversations we have.”

Even worse is that Rufus Jeffress who is vice president of the Bay Area Council told the San Francisco Bay Area’s KNTV-TV that charges may even be applied retroactively for text messages sent for the past five years!

The Daily Wire states,

The News said the California Public Utilities Commission is set to vote next month, but added that some business councils object to the plan. “It’s a dumb idea,” Jim Wunderman, president of the Bay Area Council business group, told the paper. “This is how conversations take place in this day and age, and it’s almost like saying there should be a tax on the conversations we have.”…

“To have them charge us something else is just dumb,” a Bay Area resident told KNTV. “I think it’s very unfair, especially for the people that can barely pay for their cell phone plan already.”

No one really knows as of yet how much these charges would actually be, but most likely it would be a flat charge per customer, not per text.

“To have them charge us something else is just dumb,” a Bay Area resident told KNTV. “I think it’s very unfair, especially for the people that can barely pay for their cell phone plan already.”

An additional disadvantage to such a charge would be that services such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp would not have to suffer these fees, which would hurt wireless carriers ultimately.
