The Valero refinery in Port Arthur is one of the largest in the United States, producing roughly 435,000 barrels of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel each day. The incident is likely to draw increased scrutiny to safety practices in the region, which is home to a dense concentration of oil and gas facilities along the Gulf Coast.
