Carrey Slashes Price Of Home
Hollywood star Jim Carrey has been facing significant challenges in selling his Los Angeles home, which was listed over a year ago.
Originally priced just under $29 million, the property has undergone multiple price reductions due to a lack of interested buyers. The most recent listing price is $21.9 million, marking the third time Carrey has lowered the asking price, representing nearly a 25% decrease for the 11,000-square-foot house, according to Fox Business.
Located in the upscale Brentwood neighborhood, Carrey’s estate is replete with luxurious amenities, including a tennis court, a waterfall pool, and a custom Art Deco theater. Despite these features and Carrey’s celebrity status, the property has lingered on the market. Carrey, who has owned the estate for nearly 30 years, describes it as a “place of enchantment and inspiration.”
Carrey's desire to step away from the spotlight and focus on other aspects of his life might be influencing his decision to sell. In a 2022 interview with Access Hollywood, Carrey shared, “I really like my quiet life, and I really love putting paint on canvas, and I really love my spiritual life, and I feel like – and this is something you might never hear another celebrity say as long as time exists – I have enough. I’ve done enough. I am enough.”
Carrey’s acting career has slowed significantly, with his most recent significant roles being in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise and the TV series Kidding. He hasn’t starred in a major film in nearly a decade, as he enjoys his painting and other personal interests. In interviews, Carrey has expressed his desire to be “frighteningly normal” and hinted at a possible retirement from acting.
He has also been vocal about his dissatisfaction with the entertainment industry, telling The Hollywood Reporter in 2018 that he “didn’t like what was happening” in his field and “just didn’t want to be in the business anymore.”
Jim Carrey is not alone in his quest for a quieter life away from Hollywood. Mark Wahlberg, Dean Cain, and Nicole Kidman are among the many stars who have left California for more private lives. Mark Wahlberg moved his family to Las Vegas, saying it was time for his children to pursue their own dreams. “I spent lots of time in LA pursuing my interests and my career, and now it’s time for them to pursue theirs. Everybody is thriving there. It’s been great,” Wahlberg told E! News in April.
Julia Roberts fled Hollywood for her Taos, New Mexico, ranch nearly two decades ago. In a 2003 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Roberts explained that the 32-acre ranch is where she feels “most at home.” She noted that Los Angeles is a town of show business, and she finds being a celebrity difficult. The property has become her primary residence, especially after the birth of her twins.
Other celebrities like Josh Brolin, who moved to Atlanta during the coronavirus pandemic, and Matthew McConaughey, who relocated to Texas, have similarly sought quieter lives away from Hollywood. These moves reflect a broader trend among A-list celebrities seeking to escape the pressures and public scrutiny of Hollywood for more peaceful, family-oriented environments.
