Dem Rep Departs From Party Talking Points Over Hunter
In a stunning admission, a Democratic Congressman has acknowledged that Hunter Biden's recent legal troubles suggest he may have broken the law.
On Friday night, speaking on MSNBC, Connecticut Congressman Jim Himes said, "Let me say something that you never heard a Republican member of Congress say in the four years of the Trump administration, which is that if Hunter Biden broke the law, he should be prosecuted. And it is clear that he broke the law with respect to taxes and possibly the ownership of a handgun. He should be held accountable for that."
Himes then proceeded to criticize Republicans for not speaking out against former President Donald Trump while he was in office but also acknowledged that Hunter Biden should be held accountable if he used his father's influence to commit crimes.
The Democratic Congressman then addressed the question of impeachment, saying, "There is today zero evidence, zero evidence that Joe Biden, the president of the United States, knew about what his son was doing. If, if he did know about it, if he participated in that, then that is a very different conversation."
Hunter Biden is currently being investigated by the federal government and although he had reached a plea deal in regards to two misdemeanor counts of failing to pay federal taxes, the agreement recently fell through, although the White House continues to support him, according to Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.
Many Republicans have long accused Hunter Biden of taking advantage of his father's influence to further his business and financial ventures. This latest admission from a Democratic Congressman serves as further proof that Hunter Biden's actions may have been illegal.
It remains to be seen whether Hunter Biden will be held accountable for these alleged crimes and whether the Justice Department has enough to prosecute him. The Republican Party has also called for Congress to investigate Hunter Biden further, so the situation remains fluid.
The statement from Himes also serves as a reminder of the double standards between how Republicans and Democrats are treated in regards to legal and ethical violations. Republicans were quick to condemn Trump, but Democrats often don't speak out against those in their own party.
For the moment, the White House is supporting Hunter Biden as he navigates the legal system and will defend him until substantial evidence arises. However, Himes' comments on Friday suggest the Democratic Party is trying to end the double standards and hold Biden accountable for any crimes he may have committed.
