Florida Man Charged In Vicious Stabbing
The details of the case are stark, and the sequence of events, as described by investigators, unfolded rapidly in a residential Florida neighborhood.
Authorities say Kersten Francilus, 25, has been charged with first-degree premeditated murder in connection with the April 2 killing of 73-year-old Joyce Thompson Adams in Stuart, Florida. According to a probable cause affidavit cited by multiple outlets, the attack occurred while Adams was walking her dog, a routine neighbors say she kept daily.
The level of violence became a central point in the investigation. While early estimates suggested more than a dozen stab wounds, the medical examiner later indicated the injuries were so extensive that a precise count could not be determined. Officials described the wounds as concentrated on the neck and back.
Francilus was taken into custody at the scene. A responding deputy, already in the area due to earlier 911 calls, reportedly encountered him during the attack. According to investigators, he surrendered after being ordered to stop and dropped the weapon.

In statements to detectives, Francilus allegedly admitted to the killing, describing how he had been moving through the neighborhood before targeting Adams at random. During questioning, he referred to the victim as Jewish, a claim authorities later said was incorrect. The sheriff stated there is no evidence at this stage indicating a clear antisemitic motive beyond that statement.
The lead-up to the incident included multiple warning signs. Residents had called 911 reporting a man behaving erratically, asking about a non-existent bank and attempting to enter a home. One caller reported an active attack, prompting the rapid response that led deputies to the scene.
Investigators also examined Francilus’s background. According to statements from his mother, he had recently stopped taking prescribed psychotropic medication and had exhibited troubling behavior, including claims of hearing voices and hiding knives inside the home. Law enforcement confirmed prior encounters involving mental health concerns.
For those in the neighborhood, the victim is remembered in far simpler terms. Known as “Joy,” Adams was a familiar presence, often seen walking her dog, Poppy. Neighbors described her as a constant, recognizable figure whose daily routine was part of the fabric of the community.
