Homeowner Takes Gun from Intruder and Protects His Home
A suspected home invasion in Fremont, California, ended with one teenager dead Friday after an apartment occupant managed to take control of a suspect’s gun during a struggle and fire it, according to police.
Fremont police officers were dispatched to a residence on San Pedro Drive shortly after noon following reports that someone had been shot.
When officers arrived, they discovered one of the teenage suspects suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency personnel transported the teen to a hospital, but police said he later died from his injuries.
Investigators say the shooting was the result of a confrontation that began inside the apartment.
According to police, two teenage suspects allegedly forced their way into the residence and assaulted the people inside. The encounter quickly developed into a physical struggle between the suspects and the occupants.
During that struggle, one of the residents managed to gain control of a firearm belonging to one of the suspects.
The occupant then fired the weapon, striking one of the teenagers.
The circumstances described by investigators meant the alleged intruders suddenly found themselves in a very different situation from the one that existed when they first entered the apartment. A firearm allegedly brought into the residence by one of the suspects was now in the hands of an occupant.
The wounded suspect was ultimately pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital.
The second teenage suspect fled the apartment following the confrontation, according to authorities. Police later located and identified that individual. Authorities did not provide additional details in the supplied account about how far the suspect traveled or the circumstances under which the teen was located.
The people inside the apartment did not escape the confrontation unharmed.
Police said two victims suffered injuries during the incident. Their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.
