ICE Agent Neutralizes Attacker in Houston
A suspected illegal immigrant was shot and later died Tuesday morning after, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he attempted to use his vehicle to run over an ICE officer during an enforcement operation in Houston.
The incident unfolded at approximately 6:50 a.m. Central Time as ICE agents conducted what the agency described as a targeted operation to arrest an individual believed to be in the United States illegally.
According to ICE, the suspect, identified as Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican national, refused to comply with agents during the encounter.

In a statement provided to Houston television station KRIV, ICE said Araujo allegedly rammed a law enforcement vehicle before escalating the confrontation.
"From information we are receiving, he rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle, refused to follow multiple verbal commands, and weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer resulting in our officer firing his weapon in self-defense," the agency said.
The FBI is leading the investigation into the shooting, ICE confirmed, adding that additional details will be released as they become available.
"This is a developing situation, and we will update the public when more information is available," the agency stated.
According to KPRC-TV, Houston Fire Department personnel responded to the scene after Araujo suffered a gunshot wound to his right side. First responders performed CPR before transporting him to Ben Taub Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Authorities also detained three additional individuals during the operation. ICE has not yet released further information about their identities or potential involvement.
The shooting comes amid growing concern within the agency over what officials describe as a sharp increase in assaults targeting federal immigration officers.

ICE agents are authorized under agency policy to use deadly force against a vehicle when they reasonably believe a driver poses an imminent threat of death or serious bodily injury, according to reporting by The Associated Press. Encounters involving vehicles have become an increasingly dangerous aspect of immigration enforcement operations, particularly as suspects attempt to flee arrest.
One recent example occurred on July 1 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where an ICE officer fired a weapon during another attempted arrest.
According to Fox News, agents were attempting to take Clemente Lara-Hernandez, a Mexican national, into custody when authorities say he struck an officer with his vehicle before driving the wrong way down a one-way street. The pursuit ended after Lara-Hernandez crashed into another vehicle and fled the scene. Reports indicated he was not injured during that encounter.
Following the Pennsylvania incident, ICE issued a statement highlighting what it described as a dramatic rise in threats and attacks directed at its personnel.
"Our ICE law enforcement officers are facing a more than 1,300% increase in assaults, 3,300% increase in vehicular attacks, and an 8,000% increase in death threats against them as they put their lives on the line to arrest the worst of the worst," the agency said.
