ICE Begins Operations In The North Mid-West
Immigration enforcement under the Trump administration was never expected to be a subdued affair. The president has made clear—repeatedly—that deportations, especially of individuals with outstanding removal orders, will remain a central pillar of his immigration strategy. Now, according to reports and documents cited by The New York Times, that strategy is materializing in the form of a targeted operation focused on Somali nationals in the Minneapolis–St. Paul region.
According to an official familiar with the effort, ICE has begun deploying specialized “strike teams” made up of officers, agents, and other federal personnel. Roughly one hundred federal officers have reportedly been brought in from across the country for this operation alone.
Their primary focus: Somali immigrants who already have final deportation orders but remain in the United States. There is also the possibility, the official noted, that individuals still navigating the legal process may be encountered and detained in the course of the broader effort.

The timing follows a stretch of heightened rhetoric from the president. After the tragic shooting of two National Guard members in Washington—an incident linked to an Afghan national—Trump accelerated his criticisms of the Somali community in the U.S., even though the case itself was unrelated to Somalia. Within hours of those remarks, directives for the Minneapolis–St. Paul operation were reportedly issued.
The Twin Cities have, for years, been a focal point in national debates over immigration enforcement. The region is home to one of the largest Somali communities in the United States, with deep cultural, political, and economic footprints. At the same time, federal and state investigators have previously uncovered instances of significant fraud—such as Medicaid abuse schemes—tied to a small number of individuals within the community, drawing widespread attention and prompting calls for tighter oversight.
