Just Announced: Trump Reveals $15B Iowa Steel Plan This Week
On Monday, President Donald Trump is expected to announce that Mesabi Metallics will build the largest steel plant ever constructed in the nation. Situated in eastern Iowa, this location marks a pivotal moment for the industry. According to Fox News, the company has pledged to establish 1,750 permanent positions across the state.
Additionally, the first phase of construction is forecasted to employ 5,000 to 6,000 workers. This project signifies a major leap forward for American manufacturing. ABC News notes that no facility of this scale has been built in the country since the 1960s.
Scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Oval Office, the event will feature Trump alongside Mesabi Metallics executives. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is also expected to attend. The Wall Street Journal first broke the details of the project, a fact later verified by ABC News.
The scale of this venture is immense. Once the initial phase is finished, the plant is forecasted to yield 7.5 million tons of steel annually. In the long term, yearly output is projected to rise to 10 million tons. This single Iowa site would account for approximately 10% of the total U.S. steel production recorded the previous year.
The company plans to obtain iron ore from a newly developed mine in Minnesota. Mesabi has already dedicated $2.5 billion to this mining operation. As reported by the New York Post, this represents the first new mining excavation initiated in the U.S. in fifty years. The mine is designed to produce 7.5 million tons of iron ore per year and create 350 new jobs in Minnesota.
The critical detail is this: ground-breaking is expected to start this month. However, actual steel production is not scheduled to begin until 2030. Mesabi confirms that the facility will not commence steel manufacturing until that time. While the timeline is lengthy, the financial investment is significant.
This announcement fits into a broader strategy focused on domestic production. It comes just ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. As the New York Post notes, Vice President JD Vance has made several visits to the state to promote the administration's agenda.
An official told ABC News that the initiative strengthens local areas and secures supply chains. The statement read: "Today's announcement underscores the President's historic efforts to revitalize the U.S. steel industry—supporting local communities, strengthening supply chains, and protecting our national security".
A separate viewpoint emphasized the broader consequences. "President Trump is delivering on his promise to rebuild American industry, reshore manufacturing, and create new jobs," they remarked. The New York Post also observed that the president's 50% tariffs on steel have increased construction costs.
The background of this situation is complex. The Essar Group, an Indian multinational conglomerate, backs Mesabi Metallics. This entity originally proposed the mine and mill project two decades ago, but the effort eventually failed. Ten years later, the mining venture filed for bankruptcy, according to ABC News.
Despite this history, the current plan is moving forward. The White House is betting on this deal to show concrete results. The project entails a $15 billion investment from the company, a massive amount for a single site.
John Jovanovic, chairman of the U.S. Export-Import Bank, is also expected to be present. The attendance of these officials demonstrates strong support for the agreement. Although the project requires a ten-year wait before steel production begins, job opportunities are starting immediately.
This marks the first mega-steel plant built in the United States since the 1960s.
