Minnesota Mayor Thanks Biden
St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter proudly announced on Wednesday that his student loans had officially been canceled. Carter shared a screenshot of his Mohela account, showing a balance of $0.00, on social media.
"Thank you, Mr. President!" he wrote, expressing gratitude for the relief.
Carter also referenced a post from President Biden's account that affirmed Biden's commitment to relieving student debt despite a Supreme Court ruling. The post read, "The Supreme Court tried to block me from relieving student debt. But they didn’t stop me. I’ve relieved student debt for over 5 million Americans. I’m going to keep going," and included a video of the president highlighting the positive impact of debt relief on many Americans, particularly Black voters.
According to GovSalaries.com, Carter earned approximately $132,000 as mayor in 2021. When Fox News Digital reached out to his office for comment, they highlighted the broader impact of student debt relief.

In 2023, the Supreme Court ruled in a 6-3 decision that federal law does not allow Biden's secretary of education to cancel more than $430 billion in student loan debt. Despite this setback, Biden pledged to continue fighting for student debt relief. In February, he introduced the Savings on Valuable Education (SAVE) plan. This plan cancels debt for borrowers who have been in repayment for at least ten years and owe $12,000 or less. For those with larger debts, relief is provided after an additional year of payments for every additional $1,000 borrowed.
Biden has spoken at several public events about his efforts to navigate around the Supreme Court ruling. He emphasized his determination to provide relief to millions of Americans struggling with student debt.
"Early in my term, I announced a major plan to provide millions of working families with debt relief for their college student debt," Biden said. "Tens of millions of people in debt were literally about to be canceled in debts. But my MAGA Republican friends in the Congress, elected officials and special interests stepped in and sued us. And the Supreme Court blocked it. But that didn’t stop me."
Mayor Carter's loan cancellation is a testament to the Biden administration's efforts to provide financial relief to those burdened by student loans. The administration continues to seek ways to support Americans in achieving financial freedom and pursuing their dreams.
