Newsom Heads To NH For Event
In a move that’s stirring the political pot, California Governor Gavin Newsom is heading to New Hampshire to headline a Democratic campaign event just days after the Biden-Trump presidential debate. This has sparked speculation that he might be positioning himself to step in if President Joe Biden decides to back out of the 2024 race.
The event, called the "Blue Summer Campaign Kick-Off," is organized by the New Hampshire House and Senate Democrats and is set for July 8. New Hampshire is a crucial swing state, and Newsom, a key surrogate for Biden’s re-election campaign, will be rallying support for the president and other Democrats.
Ray Buckley, the longtime chair of the New Hampshire Democratic Party, expressed enthusiasm about Newsom’s visit. “We look forward to welcoming Governor Newsom to New Hampshire to campaign on behalf of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris as we work to once again defeat Donald Trump,” Buckley said. He emphasized the importance of mobilizing Democrats across the state to counter Trump’s campaign.
Despite persistent rumors about a potential presidential bid, Newsom has consistently reaffirmed his support for Biden.
After Thursday night’s presidential debate, Newsom told reporters, “I will never turn my back on President Biden. I don’t know a Democrat in my party that would do so. And especially after tonight, we have his back.” He praised Biden’s accomplishments over the past three and a half years and expressed confidence in his capabilities.
Speculation about Newsom’s intentions has been fueled by his high-profile appearances and endorsements. Last year, during a reception for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders, Biden jokingly referred to Newsom as someone who “could have the job I’m looking for,” highlighting Newsom’s potential and Biden’s declining approval ratings.
Additionally, Senator John Fetterman from Pennsylvania accused Newsom of running a “shadow campaign” for the presidency, pointing to Newsom’s debate with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Fox News.
However, Newsom has denied any ulterior motives, insisting that his efforts are solely to support Biden and the Democratic Party. When asked if he was ready to take on Donald Trump, Newsom reiterated his stance, denying any intention of replacing Biden.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, all eyes will be on Newsom’s visit to New Hampshire and his role in the upcoming campaign. While Biden has given no indication of dropping out of the race, the speculation surrounding Newsom’s moves adds an interesting twist to the 2024 election narrative.
