Report Details Shift In Policy Proposals
Well, well, well — looks like one of the Left’s loudest dogs has finally stopped barking.
Remember when you couldn’t go a day without hearing “Green New Deal” from Democrats? Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her pals practically built their brand on it, and it was the progressive holy grail for transforming America’s energy, economy, and—let’s be real—everything else they could get their hands on. But now? Crickets.
Axios dug into this and found that over the past three months, Democrats in Congress mentioned “Green New Deal” a whopping six times on social media and on the floor. Six. That’s the fewest mentions since the proposal exploded onto the scene back in 2018. In political terms, that’s not just going quiet—it’s going dark.
Why? A couple of reasons, and none of them make Democrats look good. First, the public caught on to what the Green New Deal really was: not a “save the planet” effort but a full-blown government takeover of the energy sector—a regulatory chokehold disguised as climate action. As voters started backing away from that mess, Democrats stopped bragging about it.
But here’s the bigger reason: Joe Biden already rammed through a massive chunk of it under a different name — the so-called Inflation Reduction Act. (If you thought that bill was actually about inflation, I’ve got a bridge to sell you.) Biden then used the IRA as a giant cash pipeline, handing out billions to progressive organizations, including cronies like Stacey Abrams’ outfits.
After losing the election, his administration burned through another $90 billion in “loans,” with $42 billion going out in just the last two days of his presidency. Now the EPA is trying to claw some of it back. You don’t hear Democrats talking about the Green New Deal because they know opening their mouths just shines a spotlight on the grift.
And here’s the kicker: Republicans haven’t let it go. Over the same three-month stretch, they brought up the “Green New Deal” 337 times. Trump has branded it the “Green New Scam,” and it’s clear the GOP smells blood in the water. And they’re right—Harvard-Harris polling shows only 12% of Americans even rank climate change as a top issue.
Even AOC and Ed Markey, the original ringleaders, haven’t reintroduced their Green New Deal resolution. That’s how dead this thing is.
The Left knows they cashed in and got away with it—for now. But with folks like Lee Zeldin pushing to overturn the 2009 EPA endangerment finding that made this whole scheme possible, the fight isn’t over.
