Shocked US Presses Russia Over Fatal Plague Lab Worker Death
A 28-year-old Russian lab worker named Daria Shipilova has died after a suspected accident at a plague research facility. She worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute of Siberia. According to reports, the plague pathogen in a test tube was broken by her on September 25. She was hospitalized on September 29 with severe pneumonia and died just two days later.
All public events in the region have been cancelled to keep people safe. The White House confirmed it is aware of the situation and monitoring the situation.
Authorities placed 200 people into quarantine after the death. None of these individuals have shown symptoms of the plague. Their test results have all come back negative so far.

There is a clear gap between what Russia says and what US officials suspect. They say no microorganisms linked to her work were found in her body.
However, the US government sees a different picture. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated the death is "cause for focus" but not alarm. He observed that pneumonic plague is capable of airborne transmission between individuals. New York Post reported that Rubio warned, "You've seen them do quarantines." Obviously, travel between Russia and the US is quite restricted. However, if something like that escapes, it could certainly spread just like anything else.
The US is pushing for more data. A State Department spokesman said, "Many details have not been confirmed." We urge Russian authorities to share accurate information openly and quickly. They are working with the CDC to track the situation closely.
The Trump administration is taking a cautious stance on the matter. This statement was also covered by RedState as part of their reporting on the crisis.
Rubio explained the US position clearly to reporters.
Officials are waiting to see if the situation stabilizes. Russian agency officials claim the situation in the region is stable. The US team remains ready to act if the threat level changes.
☣️Russia’s new denial—*no plague detected; no laboratory accident; pneumonia is of unknown etiology; situation is stable*—is impossible to square w/its initial emergency response, which included FSB.
Further, Rospotrebnadzor chief (equivalent of HHS + CDC +/- DHS) initially flew to Irkutsk to convene an extraordinary anti-epidemic commission over a “particularly dangerous infectious disease,” reported to be pneumonic plague.

The immediate question is whether Russia will share more lab data. The US has asked for accurate information to be shared quickly and openly. Until then, the quarantine of 200 people will likely continue in Shelekhov.
Medical experts state that untreated pneumonic plague is nearly always fatal without prompt antibiotic treatment. The fact that none of the contacts show symptoms is a good sign for now. RedState reported that Russian authorities confirm no one else is showing signs of the disease.
The US will keep watching the situation closely. Secretary Rubio said, "So we're watching and monitoring it closely. I do not consider this a reason for alarm, though it does warrant focus. The world waits to see if the mystery of Shipilova's death is solved.
