Talarico Breaks Silence Just Days Before Texas Election Deadline
He was supposed to be recovering from the flu, but on Friday, Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico walked back onto the campaign trail, ending a nearly two-week silence that sparked wild theories and fierce attacks from his rivals.
Talarico appeared at the Austin City Limits Music Festival to meet voters. New York Post reporters confirmed he had not been seen in person since late September. His last public stop was a news conference on Sept. 26 in Carrollton about gas prices. The campaign blamed a severe flu case for the gap.
His team moved fast to clear the air. JT Ennis, Talarico's main spokesperson, took to X to address the rumors. Ennis stated that James remains living and engaging with voters at ACL today.
It looks like James Talarico got caught in another lie. You can't be at a Dallas urgent care and a fundraiser in New York City at the same time. https://t.co/AyL7KU8cTX

Ennis tried to limit the damage by noting he wasn't totally gone. Fox News reported the campaign pushed back on the idea of a total absence. They pointed to a Sept. 30 Zoom call with the U.S. Hispanic Business Council. The team argued that because he attended that meeting, he never fully vanished from duty.
The return did not stop the criticism. It fueled it. Donald Trump took to his Truth Social platform to question the timing. He called the Democrat "MISSING IN ACTION" and mocked the illness claim. Trump wrote, "TalaFREAKo has been missing for 12 days!" Subsequent to searching for him across all of Texas and beyond, likely even in stranger locations than anyone could imagine, he issued a declaration claiming he has the 'flu.'
Hate to disappoint the conspiracy theorists, but James is still alive and meeting with voters at ACL today.

The president pressed harder on the timeline. Meanwhile, Talarico's Republican rival, Ken Paxton, suggested a deeper issue. Washington Examiner noted Paxton hinted the Democrat suffered a mental breakdown.
Paxton shared on X that Jimmy seems to be experiencing a complete mental Tala-freak-out on the national stage. His campaign even released a parody "Wanted" poster warning that Talarico possesses a fragile mind, becomes easily overwhelmed, and is susceptible to illness.
Speculation grew beyond just the flu. RedState claimed evidence showed Talarico in New York fundraising on the day he said he was in urgent care in Dallas. The outlet cited a tweet from KTRH News as the basis for the claim. RedState also noted that Republican fundraiser Caroline Wren suggested Democrats might use Talarico's Type 1 diabetes as an excuse.
I think they are going to go with the Type 1 diabetes excuse as to why Talarico has been missing for 12 days. Itβs defensible and they ran ads about it in the past and Democrats posted this yesterday. But why not just come out and say that? Why would you go dark for 12 days? https://t.co/VY209roKE6

Former mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt joined the mix with his own sources. Washington Examiner reported Pratt said Talarico was in a mental health facility. Pratt remarked that if this were true, it would be a moment to pray for Talarico, though he noted that while the situation might disqualify Talarico's ambitions to become a Texas Senator, empathy should be maintained for anyone facing a crisis. He added that campaigns are harsh and not everyone is suited for them.
The race remains tight. Talarico faces a tough challenge against the state Attorney General.
