The 20-Minute Video That Shatters the “Science”
Few public officials from the COVID-19 era remain as polarizing as former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Dr. Anthony Fauci. Years after the pandemic upended daily life, debates over lockdowns, masks, vaccines, and the origins of the virus continue to fuel intense disagreements, and Fauci remains at the center of many of them.
A recently circulated video compilation by X user Matt Orfalea, who describes himself as an investigative video creator, has once again placed Fauci's public statements under the microscope. The roughly 20-minute video strings together interviews, congressional testimony, and media appearances in which Fauci appears to make statements that critics argue are inconsistent or contradictory.

One of the video's earliest segments focuses on research conducted at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
It first shows Fauci stating, "We did not fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology."
The compilation then cuts to other remarks discussing National Institutes of Health funding for virus research, alongside news coverage referencing later acknowledgments by the NIH that U.S.-funded research in Wuhan involved experiments that some scientists and lawmakers have argued fit definitions of gain-of-function research. The issue has remained disputed, with differing interpretations over how the term should be defined and applied.
The video also revisits one of the most contentious subjects of the pandemic: masks.
In one clip, Fauci encourages the public to wear masks. In another, taken from an earlier stage of the pandemic, he says there is "no reason to be walking around with a mask." Critics have long cited those differing statements as evidence that public health guidance shifted dramatically over time, while Fauci has previously said his early comments reflected concerns about preserving supplies for healthcare workers and evolving scientific understanding.
Orfalea's compilation rapidly cycles through additional clips discussing masking recommendations, emphasizing how public messaging changed as the pandemic progressed.
The video then turns to enforcement of pandemic restrictions, including footage of confrontations between law enforcement officers and members of the public over mask mandates and other COVID-19 rules. It also includes clips in which Fauci encouraged officials to take strong measures to slow the spread of the virus.
Another major focus is social distancing.
Throughout the pandemic, Americans became accustomed to the recommendation to remain six feet apart. The compilation highlights later comments in which Fauci acknowledged he could not point to specific scientific studies establishing that exact distance, a statement that has fueled criticism from those who questioned many of the government's pandemic policies.
