Wiretap Reveals What Louise Lucas Said About Her Weed Operation
Virginia state Sen. Louise Lucas handed herself over to federal agents this week. She faces charges for running an illegal marijuana operation while serving as the president pro tempore of the state Senate. The indictment reveals she spoke openly about using her power to make money during a wiretapped phone call.
The call happened on February 9, 2026. According to the Daily Wire, Lucas told an associate that the venture was her "last chance at generational wealth." She added that she had "got too old to not be greedy." These words were recorded before she turned herself in on Thursday.
Lucas, who is 82 years old, was charged with racketeering conspiracy. She also faces counts for conspiracy to distribute marijuana and conspiracy to launder money. The Daily Signal reports that six other people were charged alongside her. Two of her daughters and her grandson are among those accused in the scheme.
Prosecutors say she used her political position to protect the illegal operation. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that Lucas allegedly accumulated nearly $5 million in "ill-gotten gains" through the enterprise. Virginia has not yet legalized recreational cannabis dispensaries, according to the Associated Press. This makes the distribution of large amounts of marijuana a serious crime under state law.
Another conversation on March 9 was also described in the indictment. Lucas allegedly told a fellow legislator she needed a license to start making money. "I got to get the license and I got to get the money rolling in because I want — I want to make generation, create some generational wealth," Lucas allegedly said.
Attorney General Todd Blanche held a press conference to address the case. He said the investigation has been ongoing for several years. Blanche rejected any claims that the timing was political. "The charges listed in the indictment reflect the alleged behavior of a public servant who put her own financial interests before the people she was elected to serve," Blanche said.
Lucas did not stay silent. She released a statement on social media after her arrest. She claimed the government was targeting her unfairly. "The full weight of the federal government has been wielded against an 82-year-old grandmother," Lucas said. She also invoked her past experiences growing up under Jim Crow laws.
Her legal team reacted with shock. According to the Daily Wire, her attorneys said they were "surprised and disheartened" by the charges. They argued that the Justice Department had overstepped, though the full text of their argument was not fully detailed in the initial reports.
Lucas surrendered to authorities on Thursday morning. Her initial court appearance in Norfolk, Virginia was scheduled for later that same day. Less than two weeks prior to the November midterm elections, this event occurs. The Daily Signal points out that while the election will decide control of Congress, Lucas is not up for reelection this year.
The indictment lists specific crimes including maintaining a drug-involved premises. The case involves a complex web of family members and political allies. Federal authorities claim she directed a criminal organization that obtained and sold vast amounts of marijuana, a fact verified by the Associated Press. The money from these sales was allegedly laundered to hide its source.
