BBC Reporter Has Tense Exchange With Congresswoman
Former BBC presenter Emily Maitlis drew attention at Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago headquarters on Tuesday when she confronted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene about the controversial conspiracy claim that Jewish space lasers started the California wildfires.
Maitlis, who now hosts The News Agents Podcast, asked Greene about the GOP's message to Trump challenger Nikki Haley following Tuesday's primary results and who the former president should choose as his running mate. However, Maitlis appeared to be deliberately provoking Greene by slipping in a question about the 'Jewish space lasers' conspiracy from six years ago.
Maitlis, known for her tough interviews, faced off with Greene outside the Mar-a-Lago club after Trump swept through in all but one state on Super Tuesday. Maitlis asked Greene if Trump was closer to picking his Vice President and if she wanted to be on the list. However, things took a heated turn when Maitlis asked about Greene's promotion of a conspiracy theory in 2018 that Jewish space lasers were responsible for the deadly California wildfire that killed 85 people.
Greene responded by accusing Maitlis and the mainstream media of spreading conspiracy theories and then proceeded to tell her to 'f*** off'. The British journalist appeared unfazed and simply smiled at the camera as Greene stormed off. Social media users were divided in their reactions to the interview, with some condemning Maitlis for her 'wind up' questions while others applauded her for holding Greene accountable and showing her true colors.

Maitlis and her co-hosts, Jon Sopel and Lewis Goodall, were in the US reporting for their podcast when they spoke with Greene on Tuesday after Trump's victories in the state primaries. Sopel and Trump had previously shared a heated exchange during a White House press conference when Trump referred to Sopel as 'another beauty'. While Maitlis has not publicly addressed her interaction with the polarizing Congresswoman, she has expressed pride in the now-notorious 2019 Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew.
Speaking to LBC's Nick Ferrari last year, Maitlis said she never set out to destroy the Duke of York's career but believes the interview will be essential evidence in any potential criminal or civil trial. Maitlis also defended Andrew's decision to speak about his connection to Jeffrey Epstein and allegations of sexual abuse, which he has denied.
Meanwhile, Trump and Biden had victories in 14 and 15 states respectively, solidifying their positions as the likely nominees for November's presidential election. Trump and Biden both campaigned on the message that their opponent would be disastrous for the country, with Trump saying a Biden win would lead to 'chaos, division, and darkness' and Biden warning against the dangers of another four years of Trump's presidency.
Talk of a Nikki Haley presidential run was silenced on Wednesday morning as reports emerged that she will surrender to Trump in a speech delivered from her home state of South Carolina. While she will not officially endorse Trump, Haley will urge him to earn the support of Republican and independent voters who previously backed her.
She will also discuss conservative values such as an active foreign policy, as opposed to Trump's isolationism, and tighter government spending. Haley's campaign made history as the first Republican woman to win two primaries, in Vermont and the District of Columbia, preventing Trump from a full sweep.
