Blackhawk Nearly Collides With Passenger Plane
A routine nighttime approach into John Wayne Airport turned tense in seconds when a commercial passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter converged in the same airspace, forcing pilots to react immediately to avoid a potential collision.
United Airlines Flight 589, a Boeing 737-800 carrying 162 passengers and six crew members, was descending toward Santa Ana around 8:40 p.m. when the aircraft encountered the helicopter crossing directly ahead of its flight path. Air traffic control had already issued a warning about nearby military traffic, giving the pilots a heads-up that something unusual was unfolding near the airport.
What followed was not routine.
According to the airline, the flight crew visually identified the helicopter and simultaneously received an onboard collision alert—specifically a resolution advisory from the aircraft’s Traffic Collision Avoidance System. That alert is not issued lightly; it signals an immediate risk and instructs pilots to take corrective action without delay. In this case, the pilots leveled off the aircraft, halting their descent to create vertical separation.
Air traffic control audio captures the urgency in real time. Controllers sought clarification from the cockpit, asking whether the crew had simply received a traffic advisory or something more serious. The response was direct: a resolution advisory had been triggered. The controller’s reply—“that was not good”—underscored how close the situation had come.
Despite the near miss, the aircraft stabilized and continued its approach, landing safely without injuries.
The Federal Aviation Administration has opened an investigation into the incident, focusing in part on whether current separation protocols were properly followed. The timing is significant. Just days earlier, the FAA had reinforced guidance limiting the use of “visual separation” between aircraft and helicopters—a method that relies on pilots maintaining distance by sight rather than strict radar-based spacing.
Under the updated directive, controllers are expected to maintain defined vertical or lateral separation using radar systems, a shift prompted by heightened scrutiny following a fatal midair collision near Washington, D.C., earlier in 2025.
That crash, involving an American Airlines flight and an Army Black Hawk, killed 67 people and forced a reevaluation of how mixed aircraft operate in congested airspace. Tuesday night’s incident in California now raises a direct question: whether those revised procedures were fully in effect—or fully followed—when the helicopter crossed into the jet’s approach path.
The U.S. Army has not yet provided additional details about the helicopter’s mission or positioning at the time.
