NBC Releases Survey Following Murder
The assassination of Charlie Kirk — the prominent conservative firebrand and founder of Turning Point USA — has shocked the nation and ignited a rare moment of bipartisan reflection, at least among the public.
According to a newly released NBC News poll, 63 percent of Americans — including 54 percent of Democrats and 53 percent of independents — now believe that extremist political rhetoric helped pave the way for Kirk’s murder.
This marks a sobering milestone: it’s the first time in over 15 years that Americans across the political spectrum have broadly agreed that inflammatory language by media figures and political leaders can play a catalytic role in politically motivated violence.
It’s also a striking break from the usual post-tragedy narrative, where blame is often dismissed as the act of a lone, disturbed individual.
In this case, only 28 percent of respondents attributed Kirk’s killing solely to a mentally unstable person acting independently. Just 4 percent said it was a mix of rhetoric and mental illness. That disparity underscores a growing consensus that words — especially weaponized political ones — carry consequences far beyond the podium.
And yet, despite the public’s shift, elected Democrats have continued to dodge responsibility, even as many persist in using language that casts their political opponents as fascists, “threats to democracy,” or “enemies of the people.” This rhetorical posture, while popular with their base, now appears increasingly out of step with public sentiment in the wake of Kirk’s death.
The alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, faces capital punishment in Utah. According to family members, Robinson had become politically extreme in the years leading up to the assassination — a transformation that some speculate may have been influenced by his transgender partner, Lance Twiggs. While that connection remains unverified by law enforcement, the possibility has only added to the media storm surrounding the case.
Judge Tony Graff has ruled that Robinson may appear in civilian clothing at trial to avoid prejudicing the jury, though he denied the request for the accused to appear without restraints. Robinson’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 16, 2026, a date that already looms large on the nation’s calendar.
The political fallout has only just begun. For conservatives, Kirk’s assassination represents not just a loss, but a symbol — of the cost of unchecked demonization and dehumanization in politics. For the broader public, the NBC poll reveals a collective unease with the rhetorical arms race that has dominated American discourse.
