Ruhle Discusses Interview
Stephanie Ruhle’s appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher last Friday raised eyebrows, not for any hard-hitting commentary but for her bizarre defense of Vice President Kamala Harris. Ruhle argued that people shouldn’t demand or expect answers from Harris simply because she’s running against former President Donald Trump. Yes, you read that right—a self-proclaimed journalist essentially argued that Harris should get a free pass from scrutiny. The position was ridiculous, and it set the stage for what was clearly going to be a softball interview between Ruhle and Harris soon after.
It’s no surprise that Harris chose Ruhle for one of her rare interviews—especially after such a public display of support. With Ruhle already lowering the bar on expectations, Harris likely felt she could stroll through the conversation without facing any real pushback. But even with the softest of softballs, Harris still managed to deliver answers that were completely devoid of substance.
Take the moment when Harris was asked about tariffs. In a move that left viewers baffled, she accused Trump of not being "serious" about tariffs and said that a president needs to have a “plan.” This is an extraordinary comment from someone who consistently refuses to outline her own plans on key issues. Harris couldn’t even explain why she and Biden have continued to keep some of Trump’s tariffs in place if they were supposedly so bad. It’s as if she doesn’t fully grasp what a tariff is or the broader economic implications of her administration’s actions.
MSNBC: You criticize President Trump on tariffs, but you and Biden kept many of his tariffs in place — and even expanded them...?
KAMALA: "One must be serious!"

Harris’ disconnect from reality was glaring throughout the interview. She rattled off the typical talking point about how corporations and billionaires need to “pay their fair share,” a tired class warfare mantra that seems more about rallying her base than addressing actual economic issues. But here’s the kicker: the wealthiest Americans already pay the majority of taxes in this country, and Harris’ plan to hike corporate taxes only compounds the problem. When you raise taxes on businesses, those costs inevitably get passed down to consumers through higher prices or workers through layoffs. It’s simple economics, but Harris appeared oblivious to these basic principles.
Ruhle, to her credit, did ask a fair question—what happens if you can’t raise corporate taxes, especially if Republicans take control of the Senate? Harris, however, dodged the question, repeating that "we're going to have to do it," with the same blank look we’ve come to expect when she doesn’t have an answer. At this point, it’s almost painful to watch. It’s clear she has no concrete plan for how to make corporations “pay their fair share” without causing further harm to the economy or driving businesses out of the country.
As if the interview couldn’t get more absurd, Ruhle asked Harris what she’d say to people who don’t believe in her policies. That’s when Harris delivered one of her infamous word salads, a rambling mess about “aspirations” and “the spirit and character of the American people.”
NEW: Kamala Harris gets stumped during her first solo sit-down interview since becoming the Democratic nominee.
Stephanie Ruhle: "If you can't raise corporate taxes or if GOP takes control of the Senate, where do you get the money to do that?"
Harris: "Well, but we're gonna… pic.twitter.com/lp951n3etd

There was no answer—just vague platitudes that insulted the intelligence of anyone who was hoping for a coherent response. Harris keeps promising that the middle class will “get ahead,” but under her and Biden, they’ve fallen further behind. Inflation, soaring interest rates, and economic stagnation are the real legacy of this administration, yet Harris seems intent on pretending otherwise.
Even when asked about the fact that she’s the first Democrat in decades not to receive the endorsement of the Teamsters, Harris had nothing to offer. This should’ve been a wake-up call for her—polls show that union workers are increasingly supporting Trump because they see the damage done by the Biden-Harris administration’s policies. But instead of acknowledging this hard truth, Harris dodged again, offering nothing but more empty rhetoric.
And let’s not forget the McDonald's controversy. Ruhle brought up the fact that Harris claims to have worked for McDonald’s at one point, but there’s no evidence to back it up. Harris responded with her trademark cackle, insisting that she did work there—“I did fries,” she said, with a laugh. But once again, there’s no substance, just another deflection wrapped in a joke.
