On Wednesday evening, Joint Base Andrews was the site where President Trump personally welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping. This move breaks a protocol that has stood for sixty-two years. The last time an American president did this was in 1962.
John F. Kennedy met British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan at the air base back then. No sitting president has greeted a world leader at the airport since that day. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump stood at the bottom of the stairs. They shook hands as Xi stepped off his plane.
Six F-16s and six F-22s lined the tarmac to show US strength. The military rolled out a literal red carpet for the Chinese leader. This happened just before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, per the New York Post. The scene was unlike the usual White House reception.

Breitbart reports that U.S. presidents typically host foreign leaders at the White House. Trump chose to return the hospitality Xi showed him earlier this year. White House spokesperson Anna Kelly explained the gesture. She noted that President Xi hosted President Trump in China for a historic summit this summer, and President Trump is reciprocating his hospitality by welcoming the Chinese delegation for a reciprocal visit this week.
In May, Trump visited China and invited the Chinese leader to America. That trip featured warm words about the two nations. Xi noted that making America great again can work with China's goals. He declared, "The people of China and the United States are both great peoples." The great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and making America great again can go hand in hand.
The visit covers tough issues like trade, fentanyl, and artificial intelligence. Security concerns from Iran to Ukraine are also on the agenda, reports the Washington Times. These talks will happen at the White House on Thursday. Trump plans to show off his recent renovations to the site.
A new granite helipad bearing the presidential seal is now part of the White House. An enormous ballroom with concrete walls stands where the East Wing used to be. But the mood at the airport was light. The New York Post shared a moment about dessert. "We had the most beautiful piece of chocolate cake that you've ever seen, and President Xi was enjoying it," one observer noted. "He was eating his cake. And he was silent."
This silence might say more than the words spoken. Xi added, "We can help each other succeed and advance the well-being of the whole world." The relationship has had ups and downs, especially during the pandemic. Yet this gesture signals a reset. The two leaders are set to meet for three days of talks.
