Update In Colorado Accident
The tragic death of 64-year-old Colorado grandfather Scott Miller has drawn significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding the incident. On June 11, 47-year-old Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza lost control of his semi-truck on US 285, leading to a devastating crash that resulted in Miller’s death. Cruz-Mendoza, an illegal immigrant with a history of drug- and alcohol-related arrests, now faces charges of vehicular assault and vehicular homicide.
Cruz-Mendoza has a lengthy history with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), having been deported to Mexico at least 16 times since April 2002. His most recent deportation occurred on May 29. Despite this, he found his way back into the United States, raising questions about the effectiveness of current border security measures.

At a recent hearing, Jefferson County prosecutors urged the judge to maintain Cruz-Mendoza’s $50,000 bail, labeling him a significant flight risk given his repeated deportations. They also highlighted his prior criminal record, which includes a 2018 DUI case and a 2002 drug case in Oregon.
Colorado State Patrol cited excessive speed as a factor in the crash, noting that Cruz-Mendoza’s truck, owned by Monique Trucking, rolled onto its side, spilling 47,000 pounds of steel pipes onto the highway. The truck’s brakes had failed, and Cruz-Mendoza, who did not possess a commercial vehicle license, was unqualified to drive such a vehicle.
Miller’s daughter, Michelle, expressed her grief and described her father as a fun-loving man and a devoted grandfather. The incident has not only brought personal sorrow but also broader concerns about the implications of illegal immigration and border security.
Cruz-Mendoza’s case is unique in that, unlike other tragic incidents involving illegal immigrants, his actions were not premeditated. This was not a deliberate act of violence but a result of negligence and systemic failures. Nevertheless, the incident underscores the persistent challenges of illegal immigration. Despite numerous deportations, Cruz-Mendoza’s ability to re-enter the U.S. repeatedly suggests a troubling ease of border crossing and a lack of deterrent consequences.
The role of Monique Trucking in this tragedy cannot be overlooked. The company’s safety violations and the decision to employ an unlicensed and undocumented driver desperate for work point to a deeper issue of labor exploitation and regulatory neglect.
The political ramifications are also significant. Critics argue that illegal immigration persists because of economic incentives for employers and political considerations. With increasing numbers of non-white Americans, particularly Hispanic and young black voters, shifting their support away from President Joe Biden, the political landscape is changing.
A potential Trump victory in the 2024 election is seen by some as a solution to curb illegal immigration. Trump's previous administration was known for its strict immigration policies, and supporters believe his return to office would restore stringent border security measures, including the expansion of the border wall.
