Fetterman Admits Slip-Up Calling Himself Lifelong Republican

Democratic Sen. John Fetterman mistakenly called himself a "lifelong Republican" during a public event. This error happened at the Texas Tribune Festival, according to the Washington Times. A moderator named Major Garrett quickly reminded the Senator that he actually serves as a Democrat. Fetterman laughed off the mistake and admitted it was just a slip of the tongue.


The moment drew sharp attention because Fetterman has faced pressure from some voters. RedState reported that when asked why not become an independent, he responded, "Because I'm a lifelong Republican." Garrett immediately corrected him by saying, "You mean a Democrat." Fetterman then confirmed he meant Democrat and acknowledged the error publicly.

Fetterman has spoken about his party loyalty in other recent interviews. New York Post noted that he told reporters on Capitol Hill he is "not going to be a Republican." He also told reporters, "Why can't you guys just wait till the midterms? And if I turn Republican, then I'll be a liar. … Chill." These comments show he plans to stay with his current party for now.


However, he has left the door open for future changes under specific conditions. He stated he would be a "terrible Republican who still votes overwhelmingly with Democrats" in a May op-ed. According to the New York Post, Fetterman did not rule out changing parties should Democrats turn into the "anti-Israel party" He has clashed with far-left members of his party over issues like Israel.


This mix-up highlights the tension Fetterman faces with his own party members. Earlier this month, he joined the Republican midterm convention via video link. There, he vowed to "work with President Trump," according to New York Post reporting. He also said, "I guarantee you, that's gonna break through" regarding his ability to connect with voters.


Some critics see this as a sign that he is drifting from Democratic values. Others view it as a political strategy to win over independent voters in Pennsylvania. The Senator has tried to walk a fine line between his base and the broader electorate. His recent comments suggest he feels the pressure from both sides of the aisle.


The question now is whether voters will believe his correction. He called himself a lifelong Republican before fixing his statement. This slip-up gives ammunition to those who question his loyalty.
